Every day there is a student wondering… “Well, what are some things I need to know to prepare me for college?” You may have asked your friends and family some of these same questions. Look no further! We are two recent college graduates here to save the day with Five Things I Wish I Knew Before I Started College.

We know firsthand what college is like—the fears, the challenges, and even the fun aspects. While the college experience is different for everyone, these five things will help you think about how to better prepare for your college experience.

#1: Choose a major based on your passions and also what will bring you financial stability

I chose a major that I am very much passionate about but after going to school for five years, I realized that money does matter when choosing a career. The student loans you took out will have to be paid back, and rent, car payments, etc. are all things we may not think of in that moment when beginning college. I highly recommend taking a career explorations course to help navigate some of the hesitancy you may have when selecting a major.

#2: Get involved with campus life

College can be intimidating. Nervousness about getting involved can take much of the fun out of what college can truly be. Getting involved with clubs, Greek life or even a study abroad program can get you connected with your peers, and even mentors, helping you to form relationships. This adds meaningful friendships to your college experience. Be sure to check with your Student Life and Athletics department, and go to those activities fairs!

#3: Research your books in advance

Having to purchase books is one of the stressful tasks left up to students. Before going right to the school’s bookstore, do your research! The book could be:

  • Cheaper on a different website
  • Available at your school or local library to rent
  • Found at a place like Half Price Books which could buy your books back or they may even have your books used.

This is important because that extra $20 you are saving could go towards your morning coffee or school supplies. Save money when you can in college!

#4: Having confidence

It is okay to be confident and to want to participate in projects that are meaningful to you and your career. Do not be afraid to flourish in a large setting.

#5: Build your credit

This is a great time to continue building your credit, as it will come in handy in the long run. Credit does not build overnight— it takes years to establish a great credit score. Only put on your credit card what you can pay back such as groceries, toiletries, books, and leisure activities. A good credit score is important for when you want to purchase a house later in life, or even for purchasing a car. Credit is something that might not seem like a big deal now, but what you do now will make a big difference in a few years.
