Beyond the Classroom: Careers in Healthcare Event

In July Beyond Breakthrough partnered with University Hospitals, the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, and Case Western Reserve to host an impactful four-day experience that exposed nearly 40 Breakthrough Alumni to a wide range of health-based occupations. This hands-on experience allowed Alumni to dissect, examine, explore and so much more all on-site at University Hospitals Ahuja Center.

We are deeply grateful to Dr. Rosenberg and University Hospitals for making this event happen for our Breakthrough alumni.  It was because of him and our friends at UH that alumni were able to connect with members of the Greater Cleveland Food Bank and Case Western Reserve University to have a comprehensive week long deep dive into the healthcare field.

The four-day summer program provided hands-on exposure to various components of the medical field including pulmonology, cardiology, neurology, robotics, plastic surgery, nutrition, and more. The program also provided opportunities for Alumni to engage with physicians, clinicians, and current college-level students pursuing medically-related fields. Students got hands-on dissecting cow lungs and worked to become CPR certified. They even had the opportunity to attend a career fair at Case Western Reserve University to explore dozens of fields within health and medicine. Students also learned about food as medicine and spent time at the Greater Cleveland Food Bank boxing up nearly 5,000 pounds of food, a considerable feat! Spectrum news even wrote about our students at the food bank!
